The newest addition to the Netball World Cup 2023 mural legacy programme adorns the wall of the swimming pool at the Atlantis-based sports complex. 

Previous unveilings of Netball World Cup artwork have taken place in Langa, Khayelitsha, Strand, Bellville South and Mitchells Plain. 

The Wesfleur Sports Complex houses the only swimming pool, athletics track and mashie golf-course in the greater Atlantis area, as well as two netball courts.

Due to its accessibility and close proximity to the MyCiTi bus route, the sports complex is also the home base for the Atlantis Netball Association, which has centralised all of its league matches at the facility.   

The sports complex is now also home to a three metre by 18 metre mural that pays homage to Atlantis and its connection to netball.    

‘Atlantis has a huge netball community and has developed a number of netball players who have earned Western Province colours. The Wesfleur Sports Complex becomes a hive of activity, especially during the netball season. This Netball World Cup is about ensuring that communities like Atlantis, which has a special relationship with netball, get to benefit from the legacy of the international tournament. For the City of Cape Town, this mural is a start of the legacy we want the tournament to leave behind for our residents, together with ensuring that they have excellent facilities and programmes that empower future netball stars,’ said Alderman JP Smith.   

The Wesfleur Sports Complex artwork was crafted by mural artist Seth 1, in collaboration with Atlantis born artist, Carl Erasmus, who also goes by Funke Fresh. 

In addition to the mural, Wesfleur Sports Complex is earmarked for facility upgrades, including the resurfacing of netball courts and ablution amenities.
